About Danielle

Growing up, I never thought I’d become an author.

I was surprised as anyone when it all started. Yet there I was, hit over the head by a divine bolt of inspiration from the Universe: An idea had taken hold. A book had chosen me. And it refused to let go.

That book was Sleepy Magic, and it’s sparked a massive journey of self-discovery, self-worth, and some kick-ass lemonade making. But before we dive into all of that, let me tell you how I got here…

I grew up in Evergreen, a small mountain town just outside of Denver, Colorado. After finishing university, I fell into a successful advertising career. I loved this exciting new world – the hustle, the energy, the creative process – and I threw myself into it with gusto.

Still, I knew it wasn’t my ‘calling’; I knew I needed to pursue something deeper.

Feeling pulled by the sunshine and the sea, I decided to pack up and leave the US for Sydney, Australia. Good move, it turned out – it was there that I met my love, got hitched, and welcomed two beautiful boys into the world.

During this time, there was a spark of creativity brewing inside me.

officeSome girlfriends and I decided to start a boutique advertising agency. As co-founder and creative director (along with mum, wife, and household CEO), to say I was busy would be an understatement.

The roller coaster ride lasted 12 years. The experience? Full on. Full-blown. And full of lessons.

In mid 2012, the business ended. And out of the ashes I found my passion – not only for art and writing, but for life (which, if I’m honest, I hadn’t even realised I’d lost).

My mid-life awakening led to deep self-exploration. Never one to do things by halves, I dived head (and heart) first into yoga, meditation, energy work, art classes, nutrition, writing workshops… basically anything that helped me express my essence and connect with my truth.

Each different pathway helped me discover something new about myself and peel back yet another layer… It all combined for some pretty potent transformation and a whole lot of ‘aha’ moments.

I found myself living a more loving, joyful, calm, forgiving, and mindful life.

And it was through this journey of transition that Sleepy Magic was born.

I wanted to share all these amazing new tools and insights I’d discovered with my children. It started with me fusing a few ideas together one bedtime, just to see if my kids would respond. They did, completely – body, mind and soul.

meditatingMy little experiment soon became an integral part of our family’s night-time routine, and was having flow-on effects in all different areas of our lives.

Before I knew it, it had taken on a life of its own.

Other family members were trying it on their kids. Friends were asking me to share my toddler-whispering secrets. I became known as that guest at dinner parties, who could calm a bunch of rowdy 9-year-olds with a little ‘Dan Magic’. (Quite the party trick, let me tell you!)

I felt compelled to share my experience with likeminded parents, so that they too could create their own special ritual with their children. The idea for the book took hold, and I knew I had to bring it to life.

After six months of writing, caffeine, and early mornings, it lay finished in front of me. But though the writing was complete, the journey was just getting started…

I had an indescribable feeling that this book was bigger than me.

That it had potency and potential beyond what I could imagine. That it could, perhaps, change the world – one Sleepy Magic Kid at a time…

That’s when I started The Gold Light Project and got involved with my favourite charity, Room to Read… And it’s been a whirlwind of heart-swelling proportions ever since!

In March 2017 – after two years of fundraising – we reached our goal, raising enough money to build a school in Nepal. It was one of my proudest achievements, and a moment I will never forget. The Sleepy Magic School has been build and full of beautiful children getting their primary education. Whoa hoo!!!  (For more on that part of the story, click here.)

I also knew I had more stories to tell…

I followed up Sleepy Magic with Alfie the Angelfish & the Great Escape – a children’s book about unexpected heroes, asking for help, and cantankerous clams! ;)

It turns out that telling stories is in my bones – as much a part of me as the fingers that type them and the heart that dreams them up.

With more titles in my mental pipeline, I now know with 100% certainty what I was put on this planet to do: share meaningful stories. Stories that make a difference. Stories that help us all see ourselves that little bit more clearly, as the light-filled beings we truly are. (It’s as much about the revolution as it is about the writing!)

So that’s me – accidental author, passionate creative, and mama who just wants the best for her boys. I’m also:

  • The first one on the dance floor and the last to leave a party.
  • An obsessive reader – I can’t finish a book without having another one waiting in the wings.
  • Crazy-allergic to a whole bunch of stuff. Waiters at restaurants cringe when they see me due to the ridiculously long list of foods I am dangerously anaphylactic to. I literally owe my life to several people.
  • A madly passionate horse rider, skier and surfer. (Full disclosure: my passion for surfing does not equate to skill!)
  • A devoted meditator, traveller, creator, canoodler, and giggler.
